Othermother

eshoeBeing the ‘othermother’ is the most peculiar and demanding role I have ever had. To care for children who, for whatever reason, cannot be with their birth parents, is a true privilege. Watching these little ones thrive and achieve is the most rewarding experience, and to let go of them is the most heartbreaking.

I never really understood what being a foster parent was all about, slowly I am learning. I am learning how it feels and what I need to do when a child arrives in trauma. I am learning how to respond to a mother whose baby, for now, is mine. I am learning how to remain calm when all around there is anger and disquiet. I am learning how to say hello, and how to say goodbye and how to make the time in-between a happy and positive time to remember.

I made these shoes for a baby who spent the first 15 months of his life with us. I believe that what we wear on our feet is the most important ‘garment’ of all. These moccasins were made for his feet only, and over time became shaped by his individual footprint. In the same way that these shoes could belong to no other, the path that we walk is always our own, we hope that, with guidance,  we choose the right route. We should tread lightly.
